John : It’s my mom’s. She is not home for a while, so it’s mine until she comes back.

Min   : What if you get into a car accident?
John : I already threw caution to the wind.

 

John : 헤이, 니나! 타! Min   : 그 차 어디서 난 거야? John : 엄마꺼야. 당분간 어머니가 집에 안 계셔서 그 동안은 내꺼지 뭐. Min   : 차사고라도 나면 어쩔려구 그래? John : 난 이미 그 정도 위험은 감수했어.

해설)

‘caution’ 은 ‘조심, 주의’ 라는 뜻입니다. 그런데 그 ‘주의’를 ‘throw to the wind’ 한다는 것은 ‘바람에 던져버린다’는 것이죠. 즉 어떤 일에 주의나 조심 따위는 집어치우고 ‘막 나가는’ 상황을 표현하는 것입니다. 어느 정도 위험은 감수하고(take a risk) 일을 진행시키는 것입니다.
